Importance of Institutional Mission

Student Services Professional must translate the mission statement in their services. It implies the services focus on fulfilling the mission of the institution. The institution mission shapes professional practices in student affairs. Student affairs professionals also need to be proactive. Unfortunately, some organization do not take this issue into serious consideration. Eventually, it leads to inappropriate services and complaints from students.
Student Services is committed to enhancing the individual student experience by providing an accessible, efficient and excellent service which supports the mission statement. Hence, thereby enabling each student to achieve their full potential.

  1. That is true that student affairs professionals have to serve students within the framework of the mission statement. Suppose an institution of higher education is changing its mission what will be the role of student affairs professionals for this exercise?

  2. In that scenario, the role of student affairs professionals is to adapt to the new mission statement. They are to restructure their services according to the mission statement.

  3. You are right, the importance of mission statement cannot be overemphasized. It is the mouth piece of the school, that gives insight on what to expect and as such should be clear and comprehensible.

  4. I am glad that you stressed the importance of translating the mission statement in the services that we provide. That is the true purpose of mission statement. As you have mentioned so well, unfortunately, many workers do not. A mission statement must be tested and revisited. This is the value of evaluation. It is true that without effective leader, people and companies perish. It is the role of administrators to ensure that the customers receive services based on the mission of the company.

  5. First of all thanks for posting on my blog.

    Regarding your blog for this week, you are right on in saying that many do not take initiative in following their mission or don't really take initiative at all. I think the most obvious way people in the student services field fail to take initiative is in there use of theory as our text from Chapter 8 suggests. Simply knowing theory doesn't ensure we will use it (McClellan 2009, 150). I think this is a shame because in many schools the mission statements say something like "enhance excellence" or "challenge students to become sound in their academics, communication skills, social skills, emotional state, etc." If student services are not applying the theories they learned in their graduate work, how are they themselves practicing what they preach. I think that students can either be limited or challenged by their school administrators. In order to challenge others we need to always challenge ourselves. We need to take the initiative to use the theories we learned in school...even though it may be easier at first glance to trust our experience. Take initiative.
